JFK —> MSY on jetBlue Flight 775
Flight: jetBlue 775 from New York City to New Orleans
Scheduled Date and Time: Tuesday, May 22nd, 2018 at 9:45pm
Check In and Security: I checked in online and had no luggage to check, so breezed right through into the security area. I have TSA Pre and had no wait in that line to go through security. The experience in fact felt distinctly pre-9/11 in its ease and serenity.
(Pro tip: Before going through security, make sure you get a glimpse out the windows of the magnificent old TWA Terminal.)
Terminal: JFK’s Terminal 5 is a pretty pleasant place as far as airport terminals go. I have Priority Pass, which typically gives me access to lounges at airports. No such lounge was available to me in Terminal 5, but then again the need for one is fairly minimal, as the terminal has good food, drink and shopping options–my favorite of which is the Muji store. It’s also well designed, with plenty of central seating.
I’d like to note that I got a pint bottle of water for $3.26 tax included, which felt like a coup.
The gate was standard, but had a nice phone-charging station.
Boarding: On time, quick, and painless. This was a mostly empty flight, so the whole thing took five minutes. Once seated, however, we were delayed waiting for two pilots who needed to get to New Orleans for the flight they were working the next day. We ended up pushing back from the gate almost half an hour late, at 10:11pm.
Seat: I was in seat 14F, a regular economy window seat. True to the airline’s claims, there was a good amount of legroom. I had the row to myself so was really able to spread out. There was some wear and tear on the faux-leather seats, but they were comfortable. I fell asleep almost immediately and didn’t wake up again until 1am, when we began our initial descent.
To my dismay, there were no USB or regular outlets with which to keep my phone charged. Each seat had its own very small TV screen–note, however, that if you didn’t bring your own earphones, a set from the airline will set you back $5. Same if you require a blanket or pillow (that would be $10 for both).
Bathrooms: I never used the bathrooms, but there were three in total, one at the front and two at the back of the plane.
Staff: During my limited interaction with the crew, I found all to be friendly and pleasant.
Food and Drink: The standard refreshments and snacks such as Cheez-Its, pretzels, and chocolate chip cookies were available. Beer, wine, and liquor cost $7. More substantial snack boxes were available for between $6 and $8.
Misc: The plane was on the cold side–I could have used one of those $5 blankets, but didn’t on principle.
Landing: Twenty minutes late, likely due to the delay before takeoff at JFK. The New Orleans airport was all closed up at this hour, after 1am. But the Uber situation was really easy to navigate, and I was out of there in no time.
A booked this particular flight because the one-way leg was on sale for just $60. Instead of cash, I paid with 3,400 TruBlue points, plus $5.60 in fees.
